since e2ee falls off as mostly marketing bs, what's left? well, actually, their internal storage of your mail seems pretty robust (called zero-access encryption) and should be their leading instead of supporting feature for security. So sending/receiving mails to other services (which should be the expected default case) is the weak point in their security chain, just as for any other provider. not useless, but say you're a journalist wanting complete privacy, wouldn't it be easier to provide a public encryption key 1 rather than expect your contacts to register a new account? claiming that your email provides e2ee "by default" in contrast to other providers rings false, as they admit that pretty much all competitors also use tls (already protecting you from snooping by "your network administrator, your internet service provider (ISP), hackers, the government"). Now, as expected, their claim of full end-to-end encryption (e2ee) is massively overstated and only works for the specific case of messages between proton mail users. tbh, if it weren't for their marketing copy i'd be satisfied. Plus, it will notify you when messages arrive in your ProtonMail inbox and custom folders. Not a security expert by any means (honestly, barely an amateur), but i finally dug into my mild scepticism of proton mail's claims (and amateur cough cough user hype) of encryption to see what they actually do and. Thus, users must also know the necessary IMAP settings to set up an email account, which allows it to send notification emails to any mail address you provide. ProtonMail also supports IMAP settings in addition to SMTP. Do not use your Login or Mailbox password. Option Description SMTP Host: 127.0.0.1 SMTP Port: 1025 TLS SMTP Username: Your full email address SMTP Password: Passwords get automatically generated from the Bridge. With this ProtonMail email configuration, you can access your ProtonMail account from any desktop or mobile app that supports SMTP. It aims to create an internet that respects privacy and is protected against cyberattacks by automatically encrypting and decrypting email as it enters and leaves the computer. ProtonMail is a simple, secure email service with built-in end-to-end encryption and cutting-edge security features.
